I remember years ago when i used to run track and field at International level and i ran the 400m Hurdles event. I would prepare for the race in detail with my warm up and hurdle drills so my body was prepared to perform at its peak. I would envision the start of the race and getting to the first hurdle in a set amount of strides and really stretching out down the back straight seeing each hurdle early and adjusting my stride length preparing for the next. But somewhere between the 5th hurdle (race had a total of 10) and the 8th i lost concentration and subsequently lost ground. It seemed to happen almost every race. Why do i tell you this – well lets relate that to projects that sometimes drift as everyone begins to feel like they know what they should be working on.
Have you ever as a Project Manager stepped back and needed to refocus everyone because the team performance has drifted based on a lack of concentration by the Project Manager on the key tasks?
I have found that going to a daily update to the team with the key activities not only focuses the team but also improves communication
